What your child should master by the end of 3rd Grade
By the end of 3rd Grade, a child should understand multiplication and division and know the basic facts within 100. This is a pivotal year: fractions are introduced as numbers, and students begin measuring area and solving richer multi-step problems.
Key learning topics:
Multiply and divide within 100; know multiplication facts from memory
Understand multiplication as equal groups and arrays, and division as sharing or grouping
Solve two-step word problems using all four operations
Understand fractions as numbers on a number line; recognize equivalent fractions and compare
Round numbers; add and subtract within 1,000; multiply one-digit numbers by multiples of 10
Measure and calculate area; connect area to multiplication; find perimeter
Tell time to the minute; measure mass and liquid volume; read and make graphs
Proficiency looks like: a child who can recall 7 x 8, explain why 1/2 equals 2/4 on a number line, and find the area of a rectangle.
